She frequented artistic workshops and encountered fellow surrealist Jacqueline Lamba, forging connections that would shape her artistic vision. Venturing beyond Paris, Maar embarked on photographic expeditions to Barcelona and London, capturing the social upheaval wrought by the economic depression following the Wall Street Crash of 1929.
